Parashat Kedoshim

The Torah portion for this Shabbat is Kedoshim (Leviticus 19:1-20:27, the seventh in the book of Leviticus. It instructs the Israelites to be holy. It details dozens of laws regulating all aspects of life, including observing Shabbat, loving one’s neighbor, and leaving portions of a field for the poor. It ends by detailing punishments for certain types of idolatry and sexual misconduct.

The Haftarah for Ashkenazim is Ezekiel 22:1-19, in which the prophet conveys G-d’s accusing the Jewish people of sins, including some of the actions forbidden in the Torah portion. The Haftarah for Sephardim is Ezekiel 20:2-20, in which the prophet conveys G-d’s message that He warned the Israelites in the wilderness not to follow the ways of their ancestors, but to follow G-d’s laws.
